“All in the Family” sought to show the changing relationships over generations, with Archie confronting his own racism and narrow-minded views. Lear was inspired to create the series after reading an article in Variety that reminded him of the relationship he had with his own father. The series starred Carroll O’Connor as outspoken bigot Archie Bunker ad how he deals with the changing world around him, particularly his feminist daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) and her husband (Rob Reiner).
